What exactly is scarification?
The word scarification was formed from the combination of two English words: vertical and cut. That is, it means vertical lawn mowing , in Czech it is also often referred to as lawn aeration. Therefore, you can also find lawn mowers on the market, such as scarifier or aerator .
The scarifier conceals under the chassis a roller with a set of blades that rotate and cut the top layer of the lawn to a depth of 3-5 mm. This will cause breaking up the upper hardened shell, cutting out the felt and moss . As a result, water soaks into the soil better . At the same time, the much needed air reaches the roots of the lawn . The knives also cut through the grass, which forces the lawn to form new shoots and as a result resulting in dens . The scarifier also breaks dicotyledonous plants, so aeration prevents the proliferation of weeds that you don't want on your lawn.
After scarifying, it is advisable to apply grass fertilizer, as it gets into the disturbed soil more easily and is not washed away by rain. At the same time, it is advisable to sprinkle the lawn with quartz sand after scarifying. This fills in the cracks on the knives and prevents rapid suffocation of the soil. At the same time, thinning areas are good to supplement with grass seed. Finally, it is important to water the lawn thoroughly.
When to perform scarification?
Ideal for scarifying twice a year. For the first time in the spring, when you first mow the lawn. For the second time in early autumn, when it can be assumed that it will no longer grow significantly. However, it is important to capture the time when the soil is not too wet, so that the scarifier does not tear up the grass. However, count on the fact that the lawn will initially look like after a battle after scarification. However, you do not have to worry, the lawn will recover very quickly, and you will be rewarded with a healthy and thick aeration hand.
How to choose the right scarifier?
For small gardens, an electric scarifier will suffice. It is lightweight and easy to use. For larger gardens, choose a motorized machine. You won't be limited by a power cord. A motorized scarifier is heavier than an electric one, but the rotating blades move it slowly forward. So the motorized scarifier moves practically by itself, so operation is very easy.
