7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ROBOTIC MOWERS

The horticultural industry is developing very rapidly in terms of modern technological solutions. More and more tools are appearing that support lawn garden owners by completely automating the work. Such tools may include m.in. automatic mowers (otherwise known as mowing robots). The purpose of this type of equipment is to cut the grass without the need for active human participation. Automatic mowers take 100% of the hassle out of the grass cutting process for gardeners. Learn more about robotic mowers from our article!

1. What is an automatic lawn mower?

This is the next step in the technological development of the gardening industry, just after petrol and electric mowers. As the name suggests, the machine is fully automated, so she can trim the lawn herself. Unlike other types of mowers, a person does not have to push or manually control it. The robot itself leaves the charging station at a certain time, mows the designated area, and then returns to the station.

Mowing robots are rechargeable machines. They do not generate fumes that are harmful to the environment, so they are fully nature-friendly. This is a convenient solution to save a lot of time! While the robotic mower cuts the grass, you can take care of other urgent gardening work.

In a nutshell, an automatic mower is:

  • time savings,
  • convenience of use,
  • environmentally friendly equipment,
  • a well manicured lawn.

2. How the lawn mowing robot works?

It is a device intuitive and easy to use. At the very beginning, as soon as you buy a robotic mower, you need to carry out its installation - mark out the area to be mowed and set the work schedule (or let the mower adjust it automatically - a feature available on CEDRUS C-MOW automatic mowers of the L series). After that, you don't need to do anything else. The mowing robot will go to the lawn on certain days and times, cut the lawn, and then return to the charging station to recharge the batteries and wait for the next mowing cycle.

Can an automatic lawn mower drive over paving stones?

At CEDRUS we have available automatic mowers C-MOW, in which the cutting discs are equipped with a special hinge system. When you run into an obstacle or hard surface (for example, paving stones), the cutting disc rises. This solution protects against damage to the blades and motor.

3. How to install an automatic lawn mower in your garden?

We start the installation of the device by marking out the area to be mowed with a special boundary wire. The kit comes with pins that are used to attach the restraining cable to the ground. This prevents its possible movement. There is another safer way to distribute the restraining wire. It is used more often by installers. It consists of laying a restriction wire under the surface of the lawn using a special cable laying machines. This method protects the cable from damage. After spreading the cable on the lawn, connect it to the charging station. After that, the mowing robot can be turned on to start work.

Installation instructions in three steps:

  1. Using a boundary wire, mark out the area to be mowed.
  2. Restraining cable is connected to the charging station.
  3. Manually set the mowing schedule or turn on the robot and let it set the mowing schedule on its own based on a map of the garden it has drawn.

Mobile app to control the mowing robot

CEDRUS C-MOW mowing robot can be connected to the mobile application "Robotic-Mower Connect", which is used to operate the device remotely. With its help, it is possible to set your own lawn mowing schedule. You can also run the mower yourself, outside of standard mowing hours, stop it, send it back to the charging station, or give the command to mow only along the edges designated by the boundary wire. If you connect the mower to your home WiFi, it is possible to control the mowing robot from anywhere on earth!

Determination of mowing terrain map in selected models

The C-MOW automatic mower, when first turned on, drives along the boundary wire to map out the area to be mowed. This map is then available on the mobile application. This makes it possible it is possible to designate as many as four points to which the mower must drive to begin work. Designating up to four starting points helps the mowing robot hit hard-to-reach parts of the garden separated by narrow passageways, for example. Not all models have this feature. In models that do not have a map, these points are determined in the application in a different way. It is an excellent solution for difficult terrains where the mowing robot may encounter many obstacles.

4. How the robotic mower avoids hitting an obstacle?

All CEDRUS mowing robots have special sensors to detect obstacles. Particularly noteworthy is our flagship L-series C-MOW model. These automatic mowers are equipped with a special sensor that allows them to detect obstacles from a distance. In the mobile app, it is possible to set how close to such an obstacle the device can go.

At CEDRUS you can also find C-MOW automatic mowers in the M series, designed for smaller gardens - up to 500 m2 or up to 1,000 m2 (depending on the selected model). Such devices are equipped with crash sensors. This means that the device detects the moment it touches an obstacle and then changes the direction of operation. In addition, our mowing robot has a durable and highly resistant cover that, together with a collision detector, protects the device from damage.

5. How does the mower know where it has already cut the grass and where it has not?

As we mentioned earlier, the working area of the robotic lawnmower is determined by a special restraining cable that connects to the charging station. A programmed algorithm is responsible for the mowing process. The way it works is that the mower, after leaving the charging station, follows the bounding wire to one of the starting points. Then he gets off the wire and starts cutting the grass. The robot travels in a straight line to the restraining wire, then bounces off it at a programmed angle and changes its direction of travel. It is also worth mentioning that the direction of travel also changes when the mower encounters an obstacle!

On the map drawn by the mowing robot, it is possible to designate up to four points from which the device can start doing its work. This is an option worth using especially on difficult terrain with a lot of obstacles.

To be sure that the robot mower will accurately cut the grass in the garden, it is necessary to select the device for the surface on which it will work. Among the CEDRUS C-MOW mowers, in smaller gardens, up to 1,000 m2, the M series will perform better. On the other hand, in large gardens, from 1,000 m2 to 2,000 m2, the CEDRUS C-MOW from the L series is a good choice. It is worth remembering that when choosing a robotic mower, opt for a device whose maximum mowing area is at least 20% larger than the area of our lawn. This will enable the robot to do its job efficiently, when the grass is growing most vigorously. CEDRUS C-MOW are our flagship machines that meet the needs of garden owners looking for high quality mowing equipment at reasonable prices.

6. Can an automatic mower mow in the rain?

In general, automatic mowers should not mow in the rain, but it is acceptable in specific cases. Sometimes the precipitation is prolonged, and the robot may not go to work for up to a week. In that case, it may not be able to cope with mowing, because the grass will simply be too tall already.

CEDRUS C-MOW mowing robots are equipped with rain sensors. When such a sensor is flooded with water (or at least one drop falls on it), the robotic mower will return to the charging station and wait for the sensor to dry out. After that, if mowing is set in the schedule for this time, the device returns to work. However, if the precipitation lasts too long, it is possible to disable the rain sensor in the app, then the robot will mow despite the bad weather.

7. For whom the mowing robot is intended?

This is an essential and convenient solution for garden owners who want to enjoy a perfectly trimmed lawn, and at the same time do not like the smell of exhaust fumes and the noise of the combustion engine. A robotic mower is a good choice for those who value ecology - automatic mowers, due to the fact that they run on electricity, are environmentally friendly.

It is also a good choice for people who do not want to waste time. Mowing robot saves up to several hours a day. This time can be spent on other garden work or... relaxing!

It's also a great solution for those who just don't like to mow. In other words, you can sit in peace with a cup of coffee or tea in the garden, enjoy the sunshine, while the robotic mower does all the work for you!

Is it worth it to buy an automatic mower?

It all depends on what area it will have to work on. Nevertheless, we believe that it is a very helpful equipment for garden work. The device saves a lot of time, while thoroughly taking care of your lawn. It will be like a carpet - thick, beautifully greened and trimmed. In conclusion, it is worthwhile to take an interest in this type of equipment and decide which will work best for your household. This is an invaluable support especially during the season when there is the most work in the garden.
